Our partner, Sahaara Charitable Society (SCS), runs three safe homes for trafficked women and at-risk children in the red-light areas of Maharashtra. SCS provides counseling, education and medical clinics for the women and children. Below is a story from Sahaara’s staff. Aasha was a pregnant, trafficked woman who was rescued by Sahaara staff and referred to a local mission.

Unfortunately, Aasha miscarried, but our staff persuaded her not to return to the red-light area, welcoming her into a safe home.

Kamana, the brothel owner, blamed Satya, Sahaara's paramedical staff, for Aasha’s disappearance, as she had seen Satya taking Aasha to the medical center. Kamana verbally abused Satya and accused her of helping Aasha to escape. Satya was not allowed to enter the red-light area for some time, and the pimps with their goons restricted her entry. Once they came to the medical center and threatened to get Satya arrested. When they couldn’t find Satya, they directed their anger against the teachers and field staff.

After some time, another girl from Kamana’s brothel, Deeba, expressed her desire to get out
of the area, as she was being tortured by Kamana. Our staff networked with a rehabilitation home, and Deeba was accepted to the rehabilitation facility. When Deeba disappeared from the red-light area, Kamana made Satya her target again. Satya was threatened and could not enter the area.

These are a few of the challenging situations that our staff face working in red-light areas.
