Srija and Satish are eating at least one meal a day, thanks to your help
Srija is a 5th grade student in rural India. A happy girl, Srija is thankful for the opportunity to get an education at a school in her village. However, behind her sweet smile is a child who used to be malnourished. With a father who suffers from Tuberculosis and a mother who must work daily wage labor to support their family, Srija is fortunate if she eats one meal a day.
Many days, the one meal she does eat is lunch at her local school, which is supported by India Partners. Thanks to people like you, Srija is now eating a nutritious lunch everyday.
For only 70 cents, Srija can eat a mid-day meal including rice, dahl, eggs, vegetables, buttermilk, tamarind water and sometimes fruit and cookies. Satisfied with nutritious food, Srija can focus on her studies and better prepare for her future.
However, for students who wonder where their next meal will come from, a successful future is the last thing on their minds. This is the case for the 30 million children in India suffering from acute malnutrition. And children like Srija who live in rural India are the most likely to suffer from acute malnutrition.
Yet where there is great need, there is also great opportunity to make a difference! You can feed one child a mid-day meal for an entire week for only $3.50 – that’s less than the cost of a latte.
Satish is another child who is enjoying a mid-day meal because of your help. Satish is a third grader with no mother and a father who wastes the little money that he makes on alcohol. When a teacher from an India Partners’ school went to Satish’s house to ask why he was not coming to school, Satish explained that his father made him work in order to collect food as his wage.
The teacher felt sorry for Satish and informed his father that Satish could receive mid-day meals at the local school. Because of the lunch provided at Satish’s school, his father allowed him to return. Satish was so thankful that he could go to school to study with his friends rather than work for his food.
Because of your support, Satish and Srija are going to school and receiving food on a daily basis. With full tummies, Satish and Srija are able to focus on their studies and gain the knowledge they need to live a healthy and hopeful future.
However, there are children among the 200 students at Satish and Srija’s schools who still come to class hungry on a daily basis. These students need your help today in order to eat lunch at school over the next three months – from June to August 2012.
