They Need the Van

You’ve heard of the Dalits before, and that they eke out their lives on less than $1 a day. What you don’t hear about is the simple problem that far too often kills them; getting sick. Getting sick means they can’t work. If they can’t work they have no money to buy food. A medical problem that would be a ‘blip’ for you and me will go untreated and often end in death.

The Mobile Medical Van is a lifeline for poor people in remote villages. Lalitha lives in Nagalanka, she’s a widow with two children ages 6 and 7. Recently both her children got sick. Lalitha desperately wanted to help them, but knew that if she didn’t work that day she couldn’t afford to buy food for dinner. So she went to work.
Lalitha literally had to choose between her children being healthy and having any food to eat for dinner. Can you imagine having to make that choice for your family?
Lalitha hoped her children would get better, but days later they were worse. They were losing weight and were close to dying. Thankfully we drove the van to her village and set up a medical camp. It only took our doctors a few minutes to see that her children had malaria. And after receiving the needed medicines and treatment, both children fully recovered.
The cost to save the lives of those two children was less than what you’ll spend the next time you go out to dinner.
