India Partners Receives Grants
February 27, 2006 -- India Partners, a relief and development agency, was recently awarded three grants to aid their efforts in serving the basic needs of the people of India.
After raising $44,412 from individual donors, India Partners received a $40,000 matching grant from a private foundation in Kansas for the building of three community centers that will provide education and medical assistance for three villages in India. The centers will also include small shops to serve as self-sufficiency projects. This is the third such grant that India Partners has received from the foundation, which has asked to remain anonymous.
The Riverside Foundation in Washington D.C. awarded India Partners a grant of $4,500. This is the first grant from the Riverside Foundation. The funds will be used to provide free computer training for persons with disabilities through the Agape Project. The Agape Project, based in Chennai, India trains college-age students who would be left to beg or starve without essential employable computer skills. Approximately 20 students participate in the program yearly, most of whom are either polio victims, blind, deaf or amputees. In January 2006, India Partners sent a volunteer team of physical therapists to Chennai to provide rehabilitation assistance to those in the program.
Mission Increase Foundation, located in Portland, Oregon, has awarded a $50,000 matching grant for capacity building at India Partners’ Eugene office. India Partners was notified of the award in December 2005, and has since been working to raise up to $50,000 before September 30, 2006 to meet the match. This is the third grant from Mission Increase in the last three years.
"With the support of these foundation grants India Partners will be able to share God's love and help many people in need--people who are physically disabled, hungry, sick, and among the poorest of the poor," said Brent Hample, Executive Director of India Partners.
