Eugene, OR — Wednesday, July 11, 2007. In India, tens of millions of school-aged children do not attend school for the sad but simple reason that their village is too far away from a school and they have no way of getting there. So they grow up working in the fields, begging, or getting into trouble as they grow up.
India Partners believes in the importance of education. By investing in the education of poor children today, we will all reap the benefits of empowered adults tomorrow. Part of our mission statement is to "encourage self-sufficiency," and education is a key part of any person becoming self-sufficient.
Over the past 23 years, thanks to the generosity of its supporters, India Partners, in coordination with its partner organizations in India, has built four schools and provided salaries for teachers. A recent India Partners campaign to purchase bicycles for children to attend school raised enough funds to replace bicycles that were destroyed in an Andhra Pradesh village fire in mid-May, and provided bikes for 20 other children who otherwise would be unable to attend school. As an added incentive to attend school, the children are given the bicycles upon graduation!
