Flood Victims in India Need Food, Water, and Medicines
Eugene, OR — Wednesday, September 10, 2008. Severe flooding brought on by monsoons in India has displaced millions of people. The official death toll from the government of India is now at 1,906, and 19,969,326 have been affected. However, those on the ground believe the numbers are actually much higher as the waters begin to recede. India Partners is working with long-term partners on the ground to provide clean water, food, clothes and medicines for those affected.
"We need to help those who are without homes, water, or food in the floods now" says Brent Hample, President of India Partners.
According to one report from a partner agency giving aid, "Seventy villages are marooned by the floods and are completely cut off. Because of the heavy rains many houses collapsed and 38 people died, but there will be many uncounted deaths. Traveling, transportation and electricity are cut off. People are frightened and are shivering in the rains and floods without shelter, food and water. Due to the floods there will be many dreadful diseases too."
India Partners, which has been involved with relief work in India since 1984, is working with its well-established partners to help those in need.
